Dental Hygienist in Plymouth

Personalised care and advice

Regular hygienist sessions maintain gum health. Healthy gums are essential to keep teeth longer. And for a confident, fresh breath.

The problem

Plaque readily forms on teeth and the bacteria in it can be harmful. Brushing, flossing, and other interdental cleaning measures remove plaque, to keep the mouth healthy. However, when plaque is not efficiently removed, it hardens to form tartar deposits. The bacteria overlying these deposits can irritate the gums leading to gum disease and gum recession.

The solution

Oral hygiene care session with the dental hygienist is a preventive measure and is aimed at removing these deposits that have built up over time. Also during the session, one-on-one tailored advice is provided to prevent these deposits in the future and stay healthy. Most of us need these sessions once every six months.

Hygienist Sessions are limited to our active registered clients only.

Enhanced support needs

Certain factors indicate a closer watch on gum health. Frequent care and monitoring sessions with the hygienist help with this. We recommend three-monthly sessions in the following situations.

Previous gum disease: Gum disease, in a way, is like conditions such as High Blood Pressure or Diabetes. It is never ‘cured’. Ongoing monitoring and maintenance is essential to keep the disease under control.

Diabetes: Evidence shows two-way implications between Diabetes and gum health. Good maintenance of gums is crucial for an optimal control of blood sugar levels.

Smoking: Smokers are at a high risk to develop gum disease due to the effect smoking has on the local blood vessels. Also, the rough nicotine stains harbour plaque close to the gums and can be destructive.

Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy lead to bleeding, swollen gums. Hygienist sessions during pregnancy help with a good maintenance.

Dental Implants: The gum structure around dental implants is different to that around teeth. Poor maintenance of a dental implant can very quickly deteriorate its health, even leading to its failure.
